The Mamaversary Project™ is dedicated to guiding mothers to reflect on the personal, emotional and spiritual changes they experience after becoming a mother.

In mom culture, a mamaversary is defined as the date one becomes a mother.

The Mamaversary Project™ recognizes this moment in time as the anniversary of their own BIRTH – the beginning of a deeply transformative journey that deserves to be honored. It might be on their child’s birth date, their second (or third or fourth) child’s birthday, an adoption date, “gotcha day,” or even the day being a mother suddenly sunk in. Whatever occasion marks the journey for you is your Mamaversary.

Each mother comes to motherhood from a variety of emotions and circumstances – some have dreamed of it all their lives and others had not, for some it came easy, some needed the support of science, and others the support of lawyers. Some mothers have never held their child and others have only their memories to hold. There is no one definition of “mother” or of “motherhood.” The Mamaversary Project™ is committed to inclusion, honesty, vulnerability and non-judgement, and invites all who identify as a mother to come into a practice of reflecting on the deeply transformative journey.

Launched in February 2021, The Mamaversary Project™ movement is just beginning and our first initiative is to help mothers document and share their stories of transformation.

Honoring Your Mamaversary

Each journey of motherhood is unique and so too is how a mother may choose to honor it. The Mamaversary Project™ guides mothers to reflect on their BIRTH day in a way that feels right to them.

A mother may choose to find a quiet moment during their child’s birthday party to reflect, or they may desire a few hours on their own to process their transformation.

A mother may want their partner, friends and family alongside them as they reflect, and others might want a more traditional celebration.

Some might surround themselves with other moms in their life to honor the kinship and collective wisdom that is held between mothers.

To some, reflecting might mean they discuss their transformative journey of motherhood with their children if they are old enough to appreciate it.

Who Celebrates a Mamaversary?

Mothers of all kinds – those who birthed a baby, those who have adopted, those whose children are no longer here. Anyone who identifies as a mother can celebrate their Mamaversary.

While the mother goes through the biggest transformation, there is no doubt that fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts and uncles also may desire coming into a practice of reflecting on their journey. The resources offered by The Mamaversary Project™ might resonate with them too.

How The Mamaversary Project™ was Born

My oldest son’s 1 st birthday party on Feb 3, 2019 had all the typical Pinterest details. It was fun to plan and special to celebrate with family and friends, reminiscing about the year and all the memories we made as a family of three. It was amazing to think about how much he had developed and seeing the 12 monthly milestone blocks pictures we displayed on the wall illustrated how much he had changed. But once the excitement of the day was over, it occurred to me that I had not taken time to consider how much I had changed. Yes, it was his birthday, but something else happened on the day he was born. It was my birth as a mother – and I craved a moment to reflect on this new identity. That’s what The Mamaversary Project™ is about – giving mothers a space to honor their transformations.

A vision to inspire a movement around honoring this transformation lived in my brain for a while, and then last Spring I wished “Happy Mamaversary” to a friend and she asked “is that a thing?” I knew it was time. With the birth of my second child in August 2020, my transformation continued and I felt compelled to reflect and give others a forum to do so as well. In the final weeks of my second maternity leave, and on the date of my 3rd mamaversary, February 3, 2021, The Mamaversary Project™ was born.
